Cracker of a caning

I was 12 years old and it was approaching ‘Cracker Night’ in Australia that everyone had bonfires and let off fireworks like rockets and bungers (which we called crackers, hence the name).

Bungers came in two sizes – the penny and twopenny bungers – and were very dangerous in young hands. Many kids of that time got injured and the government eventually banned them.
