As attendees at a parochial school, my chums and I were accustomed to spankings from an early age. During kindergarten and first grade, at least one of us each day could expect to be hauled over the teacher’s lap for a few slaps of her hand.
These were nothing severe, and the embarrassment associated with the punishment was worse than the act itself. Even the shame of being smacked in front of the class eased as the novelty of the event wore off.
