Every morning after registration, we all had to go to the hall for assembly. When we were all gathered, the headmistress would enter and take the stage. It was usually fairly boring but on occasion, she would not appear and the deputy head Miss Thompson would take her place. There would be a buzz of excitement when this happened because we all knew what it meant and what she would say.
“I shall be taking assembly this morning girls, as Miss Percival will be busy. The following girls will report to her office right away…” Then she would read a list of the unfortunate girls who were going to be keeping the headmistress busy!
