I’m an old lady now, but I have experienced corporal punishment from pretty much every side – as a child, as a parent and, for a great part of my life, as I teacher.
I started school during the 1950s, at a pretty ordinary British mixed infants establishment. One day, when I was seven, I persisted in talking during lessons, despite several reprimands from my class teacher, Miss Simmons. This resulted in me being put nose in corner, with the instruction to stay put once the bell rang for morning break.
