I was brought up in 1950s England, where corporal punishment was still by far the most common way of disciplining misbehaved children. My mother was the exclusive disciplinarian for me and my younger sister.
When we were little girls, we got a very traditional spanking for misbehaving – knickers down and over Mother’s knee for a well-smacked bottom. Like most of that time, she was a housewife and years of manual labour had left her with rough, hard hands which could easily reduce the owner of a young, tender bottom to tears.
