The last smacking of my childhood was also by far the most memorable – and it all started behind the village cricket pavilion.

I had gone there scrumping for apples. I knew the house next to the pavilion had some apple trees whose branches overhung their boundary fence, and it was easy to grab the ‘free’ fruit without anyone from the house being able to spot a thief.
