This incident happened during the early 1960s, when I was around seven or eight years old. At our primary school we had a teacher called Miss Benny. She was a spinster in her 40s with tightly-permed hair and horn-rimmed glasses. She also wore very full skirts that stood out and she would make a rustling noise as she walked along.
This fascinated me as my mother’s skirts did not stand out like Miss Benny’s and nor did any of my other female relatives. Nor did any of them make the same rustling noise that Miss Benny made.
