I went to a private girls school during the early 1970s. It was an age where attitudes to children, and their behaviour, were still pretty much 20 years behind the so-called ‘permissive society’ – which in reality hardly existed outside London.
Back in the provinces, where I grew up, children were expected to stand up for teachers, sit still and be quiet in class, and obey the rules. If you didn’t, corporal punishment was there to help you back on track.
