The whipping of a lifetime

On a cold winter’s morning in 1982, I was woken by my mother knocking on my bedroom door. “Up, Sam!” Getting up that morning was the hardest I had ever found it. The duvet never felt more comforting or more like a shelter from the world outside. I knew what awaited me at school. I thought back to the headmaster’s words the day before.

“Make your presence known to your tutor. You will be spending registration with me.”
