My fellow Brits reading the Maman stories will understand when I say that the UK was a very different place back in the 1970s. In particular, the relationship between children and adults was very different.
This is my account of the very first time I had my bum smacked. And I was a late starter by the standards just mentioned – I was very nearly ten years old. In retrospect, the experience was more important to me, and definitely more exciting, than even losing my virginity a few years later. It was a time of innocence, and what happened between me and a lovely woman who was a virtual stranger to me is unthinkable in these modern times. But back then, it really wasn’t a big deal.
