The wrong thing to say

Believe me, I’ve said some stupid things in my life, but I’ll never forget the slip-up I made with my mum when I was nine years old. I say nine – in my head, I was going on 19 and no longer subject to the ‘stupid’ parental restrictions of childhood.

All this is to say that over the last year or so, I had become an increasingly bratty package for my parents to handle, Mum especially. These arguments were so frequent that I can’t begin to remember what the original row was about on this fateful day.
