The forbidden garden

Back in the 1960s, my sister Gail and I would often be ‘parked’ by our parents for extended stays with my maternal grandparents, who lived nearby.

Being at Nan and Grandad’s was usually a joyous experience – they were typical grandparents, quick to indulge and spoil us. They lived in the annexe of a large house on the edge of the countryside. The owners of the ‘big house’ were the managing director of a big regional grocers and his wife, a Mr and Mrs Spencer (name changed – Ed). Nan was their housekeeper and Grandad the gardener.
