Those of you who grew up in the UK during the 70s and 80s will almost certainly remember the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, along with its slogan: “Don’t be a litterbug.” It was a memorable publicity drive, but I have more reason to remember it than most.
I was at middle school at the time, and had just turned 11. At the edge of the playing field where we had impromptu games of football during break times, there was a litter bin on the post. Obviously, we gave no thought to recycling in those days but we had all been taught to put our sweet wrappers etc in the bin and most kids were pretty good about doing so.
